COMING SOON: The Pearl Hotel, San Diego

I'm in the marketing mix with something exciting that bodes well for San Diego nightlife and hospitality. It's called The Pearl Hotel and it's opening in early summer 2007. Point Loma will be your destination for this particular slice of fun, so get ready. Soon, there'll be a new scene, in a new place.

More details will follow about The Pearl in the coming weeks. For now, visit www.ThePearlSD.com, to get in the know. You'll find a splash page with a sprinkle of local ambiance and a hint about what awaits you at The Pearl. And while you're there, please take a second to complete the email signup to get the latest news and notes about The Pearl's grand opening and more. (Posted 04.08.07)

IN BOOKSTORES NOW: Dex vs. Cosmo Baker, Remix Mag., April 2007!

Something cool is now in worldwide bookstores. Recently, me and Cosmo Baker, one of New York's finest DJs, kicked it at CSL, the best record shop in San Diego. He spun and I wrote, for Remix magazine's April 2007 issue. We sampled all matters of new and used vinyl, and when the issue debuted a couple of weeks back, we got ourselves plastered all over Miami at WMC. Here are the results:

An Update, At Last!

"Disappearing Dex" has returned! I've gotta say this: It's been a crazy year full of transition, but I'm rolling with it pretty well and definitely picking up momentum. There's lots of creativity in the pipeline: DJ gigs, lounge promotions, marcomm clients and more. For the first time in 10 years, I'm totally free from music and travel writing gigs for the San Diego Union Tribune and Sign On San Diego. It was a fruitful relationship that brought me more professional recognition than I could've imagined. Next up? The January launch of my new music site MixLabOnline.com. At first, it'll consist solely of my DJ mixes, but will evolve into a lifestyle site with interesting works of fiction, art and commentary from myself and other contributors. Should be fun. Until then, I'll bask in the joy of a diversity of work with these outstanding entities:

Bursting Into the Blogosphere

It had to happen, huh? I've taken a position as a contributing blogger for The Velvet Rope, a nitelife blog for Sign On San Diego. Later this month I'll begin writing a weekly blog entry focusing on various aspects of DJ culture and nitelife in San Diego. I'm shooting for a breezy, amusing, provocative and informative read. BTW, SignOn is considered among the top 10 newspaper websites in the nation in terms of reaching a younger demographic. (Posted 04.17.06)

Dex Interview on ARTROCKS! Radio

Tonight, I made a live appearance on ARTROCKS! Radio, a cool Internet-based show, to discuss my MixLab column, DJ promotions, favorite artists, and more. Basically, I was in my music alias -- DJ Dex -- and it was shameless self-promotion at a very high level! The program is front-and-center in San Diego's cultural renaissance, talking with the movers and shakers in music, art, fashion.

The Hook Up: Contiki Holidays

Recently, I worked on a fantastic website project with Contiki Holidays, the Australian-based global travel company. Its tours are rite-of-passages for Down Under youth. Now, more than ever, Contiki connects 18-35s worldwide, with the coolest vacations and holiday packages. Check the marketing section for the hip n' happenin' introductions I wrote for several of Contiki's most popular tours. (Posted 2.5.05)

Unlocking the Freshness

New content is in effect! It's just one thang -- a feature review of the new Chemical Brothers CD, "Push the Button." It needs a better layout, but check it out, anyways. There's also this Flavorpill Los Angeles nugget (bottom page, under "Ongoing") about the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. (Posted 1.30.05/Revised 2.5.05)

Backtracking: The Jamie Foxx Interview

Since the Academy Awards steamroller is at full power, I thought it'd be cool to flashback to my 2001 Jamie Foxx interview. Based on his recent Oscar-nominated works, it's clear that the early dramatic chops he showed in Any Given Sunday and Ali, weren't flukes.

Yep, I'm Back!

I'm back. I never really went anywhere -- except to Portland, Oregon, Philly (Go Eagles!!!) and Washington, D.C. Mostly, I've been here at the HQ in Southern Cali, but more specifically, I'm back working on this site again. The end of '04 and the start of '05 have been really busy. I haven't had much chance to be the Website Guy. That'll change soon. I've got some new announcements, work samples, links, photos, and more.

Dex on the Lecture Circuit

Okay, maybe it's not the "circuit," but I've been asked back to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) on October 28th to give my second lecture on freelance writing. Could there be anything more dangerous than letting me influence young minds? Actually, it'll be fun, as always. Thanx to Professor David Coddon for extending the invitation.

MAD PROPS: MINGA Nominated for 2004 SDMAs

This warms my heart (hanky pleez, sniff). My client and fave new songtress, Minga (pictured), was recently nominated for a 2004 San Diego Music Award for Best Jazz Album. Her debut Flipside, a nocturnal vibin' of jazz, neo-soul, hip hop and downtempo sonics, continues to draw raves. What's next? Grammys? ASCAPs? In the immortal words of '70s soul act D-Train, "sky's the limit." »Buy Flipside HERE or HERE or HERE

Chillin' with flavorpill LA

I just threw down a quick capsule on the great Amp Fiddler for flavorpill LA, a weekly email magazine covering music, art, and cultural events in Los Angeles. FYI: flavorpill also has newsletters for London, San Francisco and New York. »Read the capsule and »Subscribe to flavorpill

REMIX: MixLab@Candelas

MixLab@Candelas, my weekly listening session at Candelas Lounge, has moved to Thursdays. Expect the same Serious Urban Splendor - basically, San Diego's most eclectic mix of rare, unreleased, and underappreciated tunes. Also, expect cool visuals from local artists and filmmakers, and a few guest DJs in the mix, including DJ Hugh Herrera, Candelas' resident musical architect. The perpetual bliss starts at 9:00 p.m.

REMIX, Part 2: Lounge Candelas, Version II

Speaking of Hugh Herrera, he recently released Lounge Candelas, Version II, his second compilation on the Med Musik label. One word describes the 24-tracks Hugh has mixed up and fixed up for our consumption: AMAZING. Another word describes how you'll feel after listening: ELEVATED. Read the Dex-authored Version II press release. Also, connecting to the Lounge Candelas experience is easier than ever, thanx to the newly-launched listening station. Enjoy.

Please welcome FUA Records
I’m excited to announce that I’ve been retained as the exclusive outsource public relations consultant for FUA Records, a San Diego-based independent label. Work is already underway on the first project, a national/international public relations and marketing campaign for “Flipside,” the debut CD by Minga (pictured). This sexy, neo-soul singer/songwriter is FUA’s newest signing and she’s destined to be one of 2004’s breakthrough artists. I’ll be working the album at all media outlets, consulting on various strategic marketing initiatives, and developing public relations materials and web content. “Flipside” will be released in the U.S. on March 30. »View Minga’s website

Now Poppin’: MixLab@Candelas

As “DJ Dex” I preside over MixLab@Candelas, a weekly listening session at Candelas Lounge. If the name MixLab sounds familiar, it’s because the event is a direct spin-off of the monthly "MixLab" column I’ve written in the San Diego Union-Tribune since 2000. MixLab@Candelas is designed as an eclectic “listening session.” Basically, it’s about introducing San Diegans (and its many global visitors) to the joy and the rapture of rare, unreleased and unexpected underground sounds. MixLab@Candelas is a unique evening of jazz-n-abstract, alt hip-hop, downtempo sonics, soulful house, future soul, and ultraglobal vibes. Candelas Lounge, 416 Third Avenue, downtown. EVERY Thursday@ 9.

SPJ Awards 2003: Bronze
I was recently among the finalists for Best Arts/Entertainment Story at the Society of Professional Journalists Awards (San Diego Chapter). Unfortunately, I didn’t win for my story “A Perfect Fit”. However, I got “Honorable Mention” – basically, the bronze medal. That said, let me get this out of the way: “No I’m not bitter. After all, it’s an honor being nominated.” That’s what we’re all supposed to say, right? I guess I’ll have to be “content” – that is, with my 1998 SPJ content-writing award for Best Online Feature.
