Let Your Spirit Soar with Kite-Flying

----------------------------

This might sound corny, but here goes: The sun will come out tomorrow in San Diego – bet your bottom dollar. Tomorrow, they’ll be sun.

As usual, people will plan ahead. Some will check the weather report to see how the waves will break. Others will check the weather to see how the wind will...umm, break.
We’re talking about kite flying. Yes, it’s “old-school” fun, but according to The American Kitefliers Association in New Mexico, casual kitefliers and “X-treme” enthusiasts appreciate “the art, history, technology, and practice of building and flying kites.” These aren’t geeks or overzealous members of a Benjamin Franklin tribute society. They’re hardcore, longtime kite fliers. They’re not ashamed of what they do, either. If you want to fly kites, you’ve got to be proud, and you’ve got to be out(side).

Few places in San Diego are better for kite flying than Mission Bay Park. Specifically, the Playground located just beyond the Visitors Center (with restrooms and a snack bar) is a favorite. It’s an especially spirited place on a nice sunny day. It can also be crowded. You’ll want to get there early to stake out a free parcel of grass.

Take the kid(s) or simply acknowledge the kid within. Even if you’re a novice and don’t own a Nasa Power Wing 250, just do it. Turn back the clock to a simpler, more innocent time. Go fly a kite. We mean that only in the nicest way.
